With roses in hand and sorrow in their hearts, grieving family members and local residents marched in protest on Saturday, demanding the immediate arrest of all those involved before performing the final rites of 23-year-old Mitali, who was abducted from Badal Colony in Mohali on March 7.

Mitali, an employee at an IT park in Panchkula, was found dead in a drain in Banur three days later, sending shockwaves through the community.

As her body arrived from Derabassi Hospital, an overwhelming sense of grief and outrage spread among those gathered for her funeral in Zirakpur. Relatives and mourners expressed their deep anguish over the tragic loss, condemning the horrific crime.

According to Mitali’s family, she was abducted by four men, and despite her father filing a complaint on March 7—naming one of the suspects who had allegedly been harassing her for some time—the police failed to take swift action.

On Saturday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Pareek confirmed the arrest of three of the four accused—Sultan Mohammad, Raj Kumar, and Amandeep—at the Bihar-Nepal border. Earlier, the police had apprehended another suspect, Mohit Kumar, along with the vehicle used in the abduction.

Demanding justice, Mitali’s family insisted on the death penalty for the accused. "We want justice for our daughter. The police must take the strictest action against those responsible for her murder to prevent such tragedies in the future," a grieving relative said.

Derabassi MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa, who attended the funeral, called the incident a deeply tragic moment and a serious challenge for the Punjab Police.

"Crimes of this nature are completely intolerable. No accused will be spared, even if there was negligence on the part of the police. The strictest punishment must be given to set an example and ensure such incidents do not recur," the MLA stated.
