The Gujarat High Court has granted regular bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava, who has been in jail since July on an attempted murder charge. The bail is subject to a strict condition: He is barred from entering Dediapada taluka for a year.
The allegations stem from an incident, which took place during an official meeting in his constituency, where the MLA is accused of assaulting a local taluka panchayat president.
According to the FIR, the tribal leader became agitated after his nominee was not considered for a local coordination committee appointment. He is accused of verbally abusing a woman president of the Sagbara taluka panchayat before allegedly throwing a mobile phone at Dediapada taluka panchayat president Sanjay Vasava, causing a head injury. The FIR also states that he attempted to attack Sanjay Vasava with a glass but was stopped by police.
The high court's decision follows a rejection of the MLA's earlier bail plea by a sessions court in Rajpipla, which had taken into account his past offences. Chaitar Vasava was previously sentenced to six months in jail in 2023 for voluntarily causing hurt. While in custody, he was granted a three-day temporary bail to attend the state assembly’s monsoon session earlier this month. The legislator, who has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), will now remain out on bail as long as he adheres to the court’s condition.
