Gujarat to be first state with fully automated driving tests

According to RTO officer DB Vankar, installation of 18 high-definition cameras and a centralised control room is underway to facilitate the new system.

The modernisation project is part of a statewide initiative to equip all 37 RTOs in Gujarat with AI-based video analytics technology within the next nine to ten months.

The Gujarat government has begun a major technological overhaul of its Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based video analytics for driving tests. The move aims to make the licensing process more transparent, accurate, and tamper-proof. Work on the AI-enabled driving test track is currently in progress at the Gandhinagar RTO, with full operations expected to begin within a week.

According to RTO officer DB Vankar, installation of 18 high-definition cameras and a centralised control room is underway to facilitate the new system. Once operational, the AI-based setup will automatically assess a candidate’s driving performance using real-time video analytics— eliminating human intervention and subjective evaluation.

“After the AI track becomes fully functional, we expect the failure rate in driving tests might rise by nearly 70 percent in the beginning” said Vankar. “The system will record even the smallest mistakes with complete accuracy, ensuring that only truly skilled drivers are granted licenses.”

The cameras will monitor every movement of the vehicle during the test, providing detailed analytics on driving behaviour such as lane discipline, gear shifting, braking, and speed control. Officials claim that unlike the old software-dependent system, which often suffered from technical glitches, the AI-driven track will deliver 100 per cent accurate and consistent results.

The modernisation project is part of a statewide initiative to equip all 37 RTOs in Gujarat with AI-based video analytics technology within the next nine to ten months. Once implemented, Gujarat will become one of the first states in India to fully automate the driving test process.

Transport Department sources say the reform is designed not just to ensure transparency, but also to improve road safety. By filtering out underprepared drivers at the testing stage, authorities expect a noticeable decline in road accidents over time.

The state government’s ultimate goal, officials say, is to make Gujarat’s driving license system the most modern, efficient, and transparent in the country, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
