A gunfight broke out between security forces and militants in the Krumbhoora, Zachaldara Rajwar area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.

Acting on specific intelligence regarding militant presence, a joint team of security forces launched a search operation in the area.

As the search operation was underway, militants hiding in the vicinity opened fire on the security personnel, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. Initial reports indicate that two to three militants are believed to be trapped at the encounter site.

Following the heavy exchange of fire at the start, the situation remained tense, but there was a lull in gunfire for nearly two hours. Despite this temporary pause, security forces continued to maintain a strict cordon around the area to prevent any possible escape.

Encounters between security forces and militants in the Kashmir Valley have decreased in recent times due to heightened security measures. However, sporadic clashes continue to take place in both Jammu and Kashmir as security agencies estimate that at least 59 militants remain active in the Union Territory, with a significant number of them being foreign nationals.
