Unidentified gunmen stormed an India Reserve Battalion (IRB) outpost in Manipur's Thoubal district on Saturday night, making off with a cache of rifles and ammunition. Authorities have launched a manhunt and intensified security operations in the region.
According to reports, the gunmen, who arrived in multiple vehicles, overpowered personnel stationed at the IRB outpost in the Kakmayai area of Thoubal district.
“Armed men who came in several vehicles looted at least six SLRs and three AK rifles from the personnel of IRB and Manipur Rifles from an outpost at Kakmayai in Thoubal district,” officials informed News Arena India.
The assailants also seized approximately 270 rounds of ammunition and 12 magazines before fleeing the scene.

Additional security forces have been deployed to the area, and extensive search operations are underway. Authorities are also conducting a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, security forces in Manipur, in collaboration with the state forest department, destroyed around five acres of illicit poppy cultivation in Churachandpur district on February 8.
The operation, launched at the G. Monglian village hill range under Sangaikot police station, was carried out in the presence of the District Magistrate of Churachandpur.
During the raid, security personnel also seized 10 poppy pods as evidence. According to officials, the destroyed poppy fields had the potential to yield approximately 25 kilograms of illicit opium.
The crackdown was part of ongoing efforts to combat the illegal drug trade in the state.
In a related operation on the same day, state police arrested three active militants linked to banned outfits from various locations in the Imphal-West district.
Two militants associated with the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF-Pambei) were apprehended near Narankonjil village, close to Chandranadi.
In another operation, an active member of the banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF/PLA) was arrested for involvement in extortion activities. He was taken into custody from rented premises in the Nagamapal and Uripok areas.
