Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi on Tuesday asked all departments concerned to speed up work on sewage treatment, industrial waste management and pollution-control projects aimed at improving the water quality of the Yamuna River and its tributary drains.

During a high-level review meeting on the Yamuna Action Plan, Rastogi said the state government is committed to keeping the Yamuna clean through coordinated efforts, strict timelines and the use of modern technology. He directed all departments to complete ongoing and proposed projects by December 31, 2027.

Officials informed that significant progress is being made under the plan, with several projects related to sewage treatment plants (STPs), common effluent treatment plants (CETPs), micro-STPs and drain-tapping infrastructure moving ahead.

As part of efforts to restore the Yamuna, the Haryana government is implementing a comprehensive plan focused on sewage treatment, industrial waste disposal and continuous monitoring of pollution in drains.

Haryana State Pollution Control Board Chairman Vinay Pratap Singh said projects involving over 425 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage treatment capacity and more than150 MLD of industrial effluent treatment capacity are currently at different stages of approval, tendering and execution.

One of the major projects discussed was the upgradation of the 10-MLD sewage treatment plant at Jattal Road in Panipat. Once upgraded, the plant will be able to treat both domestic sewage and industrial waste. Officials also reviewed plans to set up six micro-STPs in villages of Karnal district to reduce the flow of untreated wastewater into drains.

In Sonipat, proposed CETPs at Nathupur and Kundli, along with the expansion of the Rathdhana STP, are likely to improve wastewater treatment infrastructure in the district's growing industrial and urban areas.

The meeting also reviewed the status of CETP projects planned for Gurugram and Faridabad, including facilities proposed at Partapgarh, Mirzapur and several industrial sectors of Gurugram.

Special focus was placed on the Mungeshpur drain. Officials said untreated wastewater is being redirected to treatment facilities, while bio-remediation measures are being planned to improve water quality before the drain enters Delhi.

Officials further informed that discharge points along major drains are being identified and connected to treatment systems to stop untreated waste from entering rivers and other water bodies.

Rastogi directed departments to strictly follow discharge norms at all STPs and CETPs and ensure regular monitoring of their operations. He also stressed the need for stronger action against illegal waste dumping and unauthorised release of industrial effluents into drains.

Reviewing the progress of projects, the chief secretary asked departments to quickly resolve land acquisition and procedural issues so that construction work can move forward without delays.

He said close coordination among urban local bodies, development authorities, HSIIDC, PHED, HSPCB and district administrations will be essential for the successful implementation of the Yamuna Action Plan.

Officials informed the meeting that major wastewater treatment projects in Gurugram, Faridabad, Panipat, Sonipat and Rohtak are currently in the approval and tendering stages and are expected to significantly increase the state's treatment capacity in the coming years.

He also called for strict quality checks at existing STPs and CETPs. He said he would personally visit selected treatment plants to assess their performance and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
