A day after Punjab’s strict anti-sacrilege bill became law with the Governor’s assent, the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) has urged the Chief Minister and Union Home Minister to implement a similar law in the state.
The committee has sought the implementation of similar laws across the country that should cover scriptures of all religions with the same level of punishment.
The latest demand came after the AAP-led Punjab government passed the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which was enacted into law after the Governor’s assent.
In separate letters addressed to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, committee president Jagdish Singh Jhinda said several incidents of sacrilege involving Guru Granth Sahib have been reported from different parts of the country over the years.
The move of passing the anti-sacrilege bill in the Punjab assembly has been welcomed by the Sikh community worldwide.
“If Punjab can pass and follow the law, Haryana must also pass the bill in the Vidhan Sabha, ensuring stricter punishment for sacrilege involving scriptures of any religion,” he said.
He said, “Incidents that hurt the sentiments of the community must be properly handled and those responsible must be severely punished.”
“We welcome the decision taken by the Punjab Government and we request the Haryana Government and the Central government to introduce a similar law,” Jhinda said.
Jhinda noted that members of the HSGMC are approaching the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the recent decision.
