The Haryana Government has revised the rules for the Haryana Civil Services (HCS) examination. The changes mainly affect the main written exam and have been officially notified in the state gazette after cabinet approval.
Under the new rules, the HCS main written exam will now have six papers instead of four. The total marks for the mains will be 600, including two language papers and four General Studies papers.
The English paper will carry 100 marks and will include an essay. The Hindi paper will also be of 100 marks and will have an essay. There will be four General Studies papers, numbered I to IV. Each of these papers will carry 100 marks.
The question papers will be set in both Hindi and English. The first paper will be in English, the second will be in Hindi, and the remaining four papers will be based on General Studies subjects.
All papers will follow the traditional essay-type format. This is intended to help candidates understand the exam pattern in advance.
For selection to the main exam and interview, twelve times the number of advertised vacancies will be shortlisted, including candidates who score the same marks. Three times the number of vacancies will be called for the interview.
Ex-servicemen and their dependents will have to appear in all papers. They will not be given any relaxation or special concession. To qualify for the interview, candidates must secure at least 45 percent marks in total in all written papers. They must also score a minimum of 33 percent in both English and Hindi papers.
If enough qualified candidates with disabilities are not available, the overall qualifying marks may be reduced from 45 percent to 35 percent.
The final merit list will be prepared based on marks obtained in the main examination and the interview. It will be out of a total of 675 marks and will also consider the service preferences of the candidates.
