Heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides at several places in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir leaving multiple vehicles buried under rubble near the 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project site, officials said on Monday.
The heavy rain has forced authorities in the Kishtwar-Doda sector to close National Highway 244 (NH-244).
A massive landslide occurred near the Kwar Hydroelectric Project after following intense rainfall, bringing down a massive quantity of debris and rocks, officials said. Several vehicles parked near the project site were buried under the rubble and sustained damage.
Men and machinery were immediately pressed into service to remove the rubble and retrieve the damaged vehicles. The 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project, located on the Chenab River in Kishtwar district, is being developed as part of the region's hydropower development programme.
The landslide has disrupted traffic on the key inter-district highway, with restoration work currently underway. Commuters have been advised not to travel on the affected road and to follow updates issued by the traffic department before planning their journey.
Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir administrations urged residents living in hilly areas or near vulnerable zones to remain on alert as more wet spells are likely in the coming days.
