The higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley received fresh heavy snowfall, while the plains were lashed by moderate rain on Sunday night and Monday morning as a western disturbance affected Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
Major tourist destinations, including Doodh Pathri, Gulmarg and Sonamarg in central, north and south Kashmir, saw significant snowfall.
Other key passes and areas such as Pir Ki Gali (Mughal Road, Shopian), the Zojila axis, Gurez (Bandipora) and Sadhna Top (Kupwara) also received moderate to heavy snowfall throughout Sunday night.
According to latest reports, Sadhna Top recorded over 12 inches of fresh snow, while Sinthan Top received about six inches. The fresh snowfall led to the closure of several inter-district roads and remote stretches due to slippery conditions and accumulation.
Vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Leh highway was also suspended. Plains across the Valley, including Srinagar, received moderate rainfall that continued into Monday morning.
The Meteorological Department in Srinagar predicted similar weather conditions to prevail over the next few days. From March 18 onwards, generally cloudy skies are expected, though the possibility of light rain and snowfall at isolated and scattered places cannot be ruled out.
