Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren strongly pitched for unity among tribal communities while addressing the 21st Adivasi Mahasabha–2026 organised by the All-Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (ASSAA) in Tinsukia district on Sunday.

Interacting with members of the Adivasi community who have been living in Assam for nearly 150 years, Soren said Jharkhand shares an old and deep-rooted connection with them.

He said he had come to listen to the pain, hardships and injustices faced by Adivasi–Moolvasi people living outside Jharkhand. Emphasising shared history, the Chief Minister recalled that tribal communities were the first to challenge British rule, much before the idea of Independence took shape in the country.

He paid tribute to legendary leaders such as Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanhu and Tilka Manjhi, saying their sacrifices to protect jal, jungle aur zameen remain a source of inspiration.

Soren expressed concern that even after decades of Independence and constitutional safeguards, tribal communities across the country are still fighting for their rights, identity and recognition.

He said Adivasis, Moolvasis, Dalits and backward classes continue to remain among the most marginalised sections of society and are often pushed to the fringes. Stressing the need for unity, he said the tribal society’s biggest strength has always been its collective spirit, which once made the world acknowledge its resilience.

He warned that powerful and economically dominant forces are deliberately weakening this unity to prevent tribal communities from becoming socially and intellectually strong.

Soren assured that Jharkhand’s tribal society would stand firmly with Adivasis living in Assam whenever needed. He said unity among different communities— across religions and regions—is essential for a strong and inclusive nation. “Our identity lies in our togetherness,” Soren said, adding that only a united tribal voice can effectively protect rights, culture and natural resources.

A large number of Adivasi men, women and youth from different parts of Assam attended the programme.
