The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert warning of high forest fire risk across Jammu and Kashmir over the next week, despite the recent rain and snowfall spells in March and April.

“High forest fire risk is likely to occur over forest areas in J&K in the next seven days,” the IMD said, advising people to dial 112 in case of any emergency. The warning remains in place till April 16, they said.

While recent rain and snowfall have eased worries of the farming community and general population in the region, Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a 35 per cent rainfall deficit from the seasonal normal.

During the 2024-25 financial year, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) recorded a significant surge in forest fires, with 1,276 incidents recorded across the region triggered by both natural and manmade factors.

According to government data released in 2025, approximately 3,551 hectares (roughly 8,774 acres) of forest cover were lost. Besides, the government in the Assembly also cited similar figures to highlight the growing issue of forest fires in the region, triggered by dry weather conditions.

The majority of the incidents were classified as ground or surface fires, which primarily destroyed pastures, bushes, and forest litter rather than tall trees.

Similarly, in the Jammu division, the highest number of 488 forest fires was reported in the region, causing damage to 1,786.56 hectares.

According to a more specific categorisation, West Jammu reported 326 cases, destroying 875.03 hectares.

While Chenab Division reported 321 cases of forest fires, causing damage to 493.31 hectares of forest cover.
