Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially begun his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam, following a resounding victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recent state elections. The swearing-in ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, was a high-profile affair attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several senior Union ministers. Notably, the newly-appointed West Bengal Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, and the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, were also among the guests.
The oath of office was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, marking a historic milestone as the 57-year-old Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in the state’s history to secure back-to-back terms. The BJP’s dominance was clear in the results announced on May 4, with the party claiming 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Supported by allies AGP and BPF, who secured 10 seats each, the NDA’s commanding total of 102 seats ensures a stable legislative path ahead.
Sarma’s personal electoral performance was equally emphatic, as he retained his Jalukbari constituency with a massive margin of over 89,000 votes. Joining him in the new cabinet were Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro, and Ajanta Neog, all of whom were sworn in as ministers during the same ceremony. Furthermore, the party has nominated senior MLA Ranjit Das for the role of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
This inauguration marks the third straight term for the NDA in Assam, a streak that began in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal. Given the presence of top-tier national and international dignitaries, security was exceptionally tight throughout Guwahati, with both central and state police forces maintaining a heavy presence to ensure the proceedings at Khanapara passed without incident.
