Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Monday night (May 11) ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the third consecutive BJP-led NDA government in Assam. He was received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by chief minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma along with senior BJP leaders.
Modi is scheduled to attend the oath-taking ceremony where Sarma will be sworn in as chief minister for a second consecutive term. Alongside him, four other MLAs — two from the BJP and one each from its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — will also take oath.
Welcoming the prime minister, Sarma wrote on X that Modi’s visit marked a “momentous occasion” as Assam prepares to witness the beginning of the NDA’s third straight term in power. He added that the state looks forward to the prime minister’s continued guidance.
The ceremony is expected to witness a strong presence of senior political leaders and dignitaries from across the country. Union ministers including Rajnath Singh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirag Paswan have already reached Guwahati.
Several chief ministers from BJP-ruled states are also attending, including Pramod Sawant, Bhajan Lal Sharma, Vishnu Deo Sai, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Devendra Fadnavis, Mohan Charan Majhi Suvendu Adhikari and Mohan Yadav.
From the Northeast, leaders such as Manik Saha, Neiphiu Rio, Lalduhoma, Prem Singh Tamang and Pema Khandu have also arrived to attend the event. Deputy chief ministers from several states are also expected to be present.
The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College field, where elaborate arrangements have been made to accommodate thousands of attendees. Many dignitaries arriving in the city were welcomed with traditional Assamese hospitality at the airport.
The BJP-led NDA secured a decisive mandate in the recent Assam Assembly elections, winning a two-thirds majority. In the 126-member Assembly, the BJP won 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each, paving the way for the coalition’s third consecutive term in power.
