Former chief minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Monday joined Congress leaders and workers in celebrating Sant Kabir Das Jayanti at the party office. Paying tribute to the saint-poet, Hooda said Sant Kabir's teachings of equality, truth and social harmony continue to inspire society.
He said Kabir challenged discrimination based on caste and religion and spoke against hypocrisy and orthodoxy. "His writings promote social equality, truth, love and self-reflection, values that remain relevant even today," Hooda said.
Responding to questions from mediapersons, Hooda criticised the BJP government over the ongoing agitation for water supply in Chanaut village in Hansi. He said providing water to both rural and urban areas is the government's responsibility and termed it unfortunate that villagers had to protest for a basic necessity.
Hooda also alleged that Haryana was facing shortages of water and electricity because the BJP had failed to address these issues. He claimed that the previous Congress government had made Haryana a power-surplus state by setting up four thermal power plants, one nuclear power plant and securing affordable power purchase agreements.
Alleging that the BJP had not established any new power generation units during its tenure, Hooda also accused the government of failing to bring major industries, universities or infrastructure projects to the state. He further alleged that several scams, including those related to paddy and pearl millet procurement, land deals, paper leaks, recruitment and the cooperative sector, had surfaced during the BJP's rule.
Referring to the alleged Panchkula land scam, Hooda demanded that the investigation be monitored by a sitting judge of the High Court or the Supreme Court to ensure a fair and impartial probe.
He also questioned the effectiveness of Special Investigation Teams (SITs) constituted in previous cases, alleging that they had failed to bring the guilty to justice. Hooda demanded independent investigations under judicial supervision into all major scams in the state.
