Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Monday accused the BJP government of pushing the state into crisis due to rising inflation and shortages of electricity and water.

Addressing a press conference in Rohtak along with MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra and former minister Subhash Batra, Hooda alleged that the BJP government had increased petrol prices by Rs 7.50 within 10 days despite falling crude oil prices in the international market.

He claimed that VAT on fuel in Haryana, which stood at 9 per cent during the Congress regime, had been raised to 18 per cent by the BJP government, leading to a rise in prices of essential commodities and agricultural inputs. Hooda said the increasing fuel prices were affecting household budgets and raising production costs for farmers while MSP remained unchanged.

Hooda said inflation had severely impacted poor and middle-class families, reducing their purchasing power and savings. Hooda stated that LPG cylinder prices, petrol, and diesel had witnessed steep increases compared to the Congress tenure. He also claimed that prices of commercial LPG cylinders had sharply risen in recent months, affecting migrant labourers and small businesses.

Citing economic indicators, Hooda said Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation reached 8.3 per cent in April 2026, which he described as a 42-month high.

The Congress leader also targeted the state government over health services, claiming the Punjab and Haryana High Court had expressed concern over the poor condition of hospitals and shortage of doctors in Haryana. He alleged that hundreds of posts of medical officers and specialist doctors remained vacant and basic facilities were missing in district hospitals.

Hooda further alleged financial irregularities in the power sector, claiming the government paid Rs 1,345 crore to Teesta Urja Limited in Sikkim without purchasing electricity or obtaining proper approvals from the Cabinet, Chief Minister, or Power Minister.

He said people across Haryana were facing long power cuts and water shortages during the summer season. In several areas of Rohtak, he claimed, water supply was being provided only once every two days, badly affecting daily life and businesses.

Hooda also accused the BJP government of neglecting unemployment and privatising public services. He said Haryana continued to face the country’s highest unemployment rate and alleged that Roadways employees were protesting against privatisation and staff shortages.

He further claimed that salaries of 1,550 teachers working in 96 aided colleges had been pending for two months, with around Rs 65 crore yet to be released.
