The Disaster Management Department in Tehri Garhwal on Thursday said a landslide occurred near shops at Kaddukhal on National Highway-707A. An old vacant building was damaged in the incident.

Officials said two restaurants, a few roadside kiosks and temporary shelters used by labourers had already been evacuated as a precaution because they were in the danger zone.

According to the administration, the landslide was triggered by excavation work being carried out by a private individual for the construction of a hotel. No casualties or loss of livestock have been reported.

Meanwhile, heavy rain continued to lash Haridwar since late Wednesday night as predicted by the Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre. The downpour caused waterlogging in several parts of the city.

Bhagat Singh Chowk was among the worst-affected areas. Water collected under the railway bridge, disrupting traffic and causing major inconvenience to commuters. Several vehicles got stranded in the flooded stretch.

A bus carrying employees of the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL) also broke down after getting stuck in the water. Pedestrians had a difficult time moving through the flooded roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next three hours, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts.

The alert includes Laksar, Manglaur, Khanpur, Gumkhal, Dugadda, Kotdwar, Devrana and nearby areas, where intense rainfall is likely during this period.

In Dehradun and nearby areas, continuous rainfall since Thursday morning brought relief from the intense heat and humidity that had gripped the region over the past few days.

Keeping the weather warning in view, the district administration declared a holiday for schools on Thursday.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, avoid sheltering under trees or weak structures, check traffic updates before travelling, avoid unnecessary journeys and follow all advisories issued by the administration.
