The Himachal Pradesh Police’s B-1 promotional examination, scheduled for Sunday, was suddenly cancelled after major technical failures disrupted the online system across several centres. The abrupt cancellation left thousands of constables, who had spent months preparing, deeply disappointed.

The exam was meant to decide promotions for 4,461 constables and was to be held in two online shifts, one in the morning and one in the evening, under the supervision of District Superintendents of Police. As many as 2,696 candidates were to appear in the morning and 1,765 in the evening. However, the process began to collapse soon after the test started.

As candidates logged in, complaints poured in from several centres about serious technical glitches. Many participants said they could not submit their answers, while others reported wrong options or mismatched data in the question papers. Despite multiple attempts to fix the issues, the problems persisted, forcing the department to cancel the exam altogether.

Later in the day, Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Tewari confirmed the cancellation in an official statement. He said the exam had been called off due to “technical issues encountered during the online process.” Tewari said the decision was made to maintain fairness, transparency, and uniformity in the selection procedure.

“To ensure smooth conduct, the examination was planned in two shifts. The Himachal Pradesh Police sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to all participating candidates,” he said. The DGP assured that a new date for the exam would be announced soon, once all technical issues are resolved.

Tewari also urged candidates to stay in touch with their respective district police offices and check official communication channels for updates and verified information.

Meanwhile, the incident sparked a political storm. Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur criticised the state government, blaming it for poor planning and lack of preparation. “Conducting such a large-scale online exam without adequate technical preparedness raises serious questions about the government’s efficiency,” he said.

Thakur claimed that at some centres, the main server failed to connect, while in others, question counts and test durations did not match the official schedule. “Candidates were made to sit for hours amid complete chaos. Only after protests broke out did the administration scramble to cancel the test,” he added.

Now, the police department faces the tough task of restoring confidence among its personnel and ensuring that the re-exam is conducted smoothly and fairly.
