In a landmark medical achievement, doctors at the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad have successfully performed what the Telangana government has described as India’s first simultaneous five-organ, or multi-visceral, transplant on a single patient. The complex procedure involved transplanting the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small bowel, and right colon into a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla. According to officials, the surgery lasted nearly 36 hours and was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising transplant surgeons, anaesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, critical care specialists, nursing staff, and technicians.
Hospital authorities said the patient had been suffering from a rare and severe gastrointestinal condition for several years, which left him unable to digest food normally. He had been dependent on intravenous nutritional support and had previously sought treatment at multiple private hospitals before approaching OGH. Doctors noted that his condition had progressively worsened, making transplantation the only viable option.
A multi-visceral transplant is considered one of the most complex procedures in abdominal surgery, as it involves replacing multiple digestive organs in a single operation. In this case, five organs were transplanted simultaneously, requiring meticulous coordination across departments for organ retrieval, preservation, transplantation, and post-operative care.
Congratulating the medical team, Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha described the surgery as a significant milestone for government healthcare.
“For the first time in the country, a transplant of five organs was successfully performed on a single patient at Osmania Hospital,” the minister said, adding that the achievement enhances the reputation of Telangana’s public healthcare system.
He further emphasised that the success demonstrated the capability of government hospitals to deliver advanced medical care and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to specialised treatments.
The Osmania Junior Doctors Association also lauded the team, stating that the procedure highlights the expertise available in government institutions and marks a major development in transplant medicine in India.
Hospital authorities said more details regarding the patient’s recovery and the clinical aspects of the procedure will be shared in the coming days.
