India observes Parakram Diwas on Netaji’s 129th birth anniversary

India observed Parakram Diwas on January 23 to mark Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 129th birth anniversary. President Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and other leaders paid tribute, while nationwide cultural events and ceremonies commemorated Bose’s courage, patriotism, and enduring legacy.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, and leaders from across the political spectrum paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 129th birth anniversary, observed as Parakram Diwas, the Day of Valour, celebrating his fearless leadership, patriotism, and enduring legacy.

Ceremonies, cultural programmes, and educational events were held across the country to honour Bose’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle.

President Murmu paid floral tributes at Rashtrapati Bhavan and highlighted Bose’s influence on India’s independence, noting that his call for freedom inspired courage, unity, and nationalism among millions of Indians. The President added that through the Azad Hind Fauj, Bose provided decisive leadership that brought India’s struggle to the global stage, and that his legacy continues to inspire every Indian.

Prime Minister Modi led national homage, recalling Bose’s life and his founding of the Azad Hind Fauj. “On Parakram Diwas, we recall his indomitable courage, resolve, and unparalleled contribution to the nation. He epitomised fearless leadership and unwavering patriotism. His ideals continue to inspire generations to build a strong India,” Modi said.

He also highlighted steps taken by his government to popularise Bose’s life, including declassification of historical files, development of memorials, and renaming Ross Island as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Modi cited the installation of a grand statue near India Gate as a lasting tribute to Bose.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the government to declassify all remaining documents relating to Bose, noting that the mystery surrounding his disappearance remains unresolved. Union Home Minister Amit Shah encouraged the youth to draw inspiration from Bose’s leadership, while Vice President Radhakrishnan said Bose’s life embodied the essence of Parakram, valour, and urged citizens to uphold courage, sacrifice, and national unity.

 

Across India, Parakram Diwas was observed with flag-hoisting ceremonies, exhibitions, cultural programmes, and theatrical performances. Schools, colleges, government offices, and institutions connected to Bose’s life hosted commemorative events.

In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and 13 other locations, celebrations included traditional handicraft displays, local cuisine showcases, and performances by the National School of Drama, continuing through January 25.

Parakram Diwas honours Bose’s extraordinary contributions to India’s independence and serves to inspire new generations with his courage, dedication, and vision for a free and strong nation.
