In a remarkable display of endurance and adventure, the Indian Army has embarked on a high-altitude expedition to Mount Kangto — one of the most challenging and least-climbed peaks in the Eastern Himalayas. Officials said on Monday that Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, flagged off the Mount Kangto Expedition (7,042 m) from a forward base in Arunachal Pradesh.
The mission team comprises 18 soldiers from the Indian Army who will attempt to summit the formidable peak, which was last successfully scaled in 1930.
Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat said the climbers will face extreme conditions, including icy ridges, steep glacial crests, and dangerously thin air. “The expedition symbolises the Corps’ commitment to adventure, endurance, and excellence in some of the toughest terrains of the country,” he stated.
The mission, themed “Josh in the Hearts, Summiting Mount Kangto!”, aims to highlight the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Gajraj Corps while fostering a spirit of adventure within the force.
In a separate initiative, officers from the ‘Dao Warriors’ Regiment of the Indian Army organised a nationwide outreach programme on the Battle of Walong — the only counter-attack launched by Indian forces during the 1962 Indo-China War.
“The awareness drive, held across schools and colleges in Dimapur, Dibrugarh, Namsai, Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai during October and November, sought to educate students about the valour and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and Assam Rifles personnel who fought in Walong,” said an Army official.
The sessions drew participation from students and teachers alike, with senior veterans sharing firsthand accounts of the battle, adding emotional depth and historical context to the presentations.
Lt Col Rawat said the initiative not only strengthened civil-military ties but also served as a fitting tribute to the bravehearts who defended Walong with unparalleled courage more than six decades ago.
