Ahead of the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, several MLAs from the ruling NC and Congress alliance held a peaceful protest on Thursday, demanding the release of detained Legislator Mehraj Malik. Several MLAs of the National Conference and Congress were seen holding the placards seeking the release of the Doda MLA.
The protests were held outside the Assembly hall in Srinagar ahead of the commencement of the autumn session.
Mehraj Malik, who was booked under the Public Safety Act, is lodged in Kathua Central Jail. Malik, known for his upright and outspoken persona, has had a long feud with the District administration officials.
He has often criticised both the elected government and the LG administration over a range of different issues.
Meanwhile, the autumn session of the Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir commenced on Thursday, with the house paying homage to leaders who passed away recently. Several members and leaders passed away between the third and fourth sessions of the Assembly, and the House will pay tributes to them, said Assembly speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.
The session opened with obituary references to honour former J-K governor Satya Pal Malik, who passed away on August 5.
According to officials, the MLAs have submitted a total of 450 questions to be placed before the government during the autumn session, along with 13 private members’ bills and more than 50 resolutions for discussions.
The house is also likely to decide the fate of almost three dozen bills that were introduced in the budget session but are still pending.
