The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced its candidates for the upcoming Assembly by-elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the list issued by the BJP, the party’s Central Election Committee has approved the names of Aga Syed Mohsin for the Budgam constituency (No. 27) and Devyani Rana for the Nagrota constituency (No. 77).

The announcement marks the BJP’s formal entry into the election process for J&K’s highly contested seats.

Devyani Rana is the daughter of the late BJP leader Devender Singh Rana, who passed away last year after suffering from serious health conditions, leaving the Nagrota seat vacant.

All major parties are contesting for the two important assembly seats. Besides NC and Congress, the other parties, including PDP, Peoples Conference, AIP, and AAP, might also field their candidates, making the contest more interesting.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Congress threatened to go solo in the upcoming J&K Assembly by-elections on two vacant seats if its ruling alliance partner, the National Conference (NC), refuses to leave one seat for the party.

Voting for the two assembly seats will be held on November 11.

Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said his party will contest the by-elections for both Nagrota and Budgam constituencies independently.

Criticising the NC government, he said, “People have lost faith as the NC and BJP have failed to fulfil their commitments. Statehood is crucial; otherwise, why are there 29 states in India?”
