BJP MLAs protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected an adjournment motion moved by the BJP for a discussion on the "humanitarian crisis" caused by the recent natural calamity in the Union territory, in Srinagar.

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has turned into a protest ground for legislators after their demands were rejected by House Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, creating disruptions in usual house proceedings.

On Tuesday, the Assembly witnessed uproar when a BJP legislator’s motion demanding a discussion on the “humanitarian crisis” caused by the recent floods in the Union Territory got rejected.

These elected members of the Assembly must understand that by creating chaos and disruptions, they are only doing a disservice to the public mandate.
Since the beginning of the autumn session on Thursday, the House has witnessed back-to-back protests and chaos triggered by angry legislators.

Similar scenes unfolded on Tuesday after BJP MLA from Udhampur West, Pawan Gupta’s motion to adjourn the Question Hour to seek a discussion on the matter got rejected.

The Speaker said, “This was not a recent occurrence, and there were many other important questions admitted and accepted on the matter.”

He said, “The subject was discussed in the House on Monday also, while there are several other important matters to be discussed. The Chief Minister has already answered the query in a detailed manner yesterday.”

The BJP members did not relent and rose to their feet, seeking adjournment of the Question Hour.

“This is not the way. All of you are on your feet. This is not your cause. I have rejected the motion. The Speaker’s decision is final,” Rather said, adding that “BJP members were trying to waste the time of the House.”

However, the BJP members continued to demand adjournment, raising slogans of “Jammu ke saath insaaf karo, insaaf karo” (Do justice with Jammu).
The Speaker then read out the relevant rule under which he had rejected the motion. After that, the BJP members relented, and the House proceedings started.
