The Jammu and Kashmir ruling National Conference paid rich tributes to its founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, on his 120th birth anniversary at his mausoleum in Hazratbal, Srinagar, on Friday.
On the occasion, former Chief Minister and current party chief Dr Farooq Abdullah said that the elected government in Jammu and Kashmir is working without the powers. He said all powers were concentrated in the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
Addressing the mediapersons at the late party leader’s mausoleum, Farooq said, “We have done what we could despite having a sword hanging above us.”
“People have high expectations from this government. However, the LG office has made the functioning of the elected government difficult, as all the files go through his office, which is unfortunate for people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
“When we ask for statehood, they think we want it for ourselves. However, our demand for statehood is for the welfare of the people living in the UT,” Farooq said.
He added, “Our government has four more years left. We assure everyone to have patience and see how much benefit and change will be brought to the UT. Judge us after we complete our tenure.”
He took a jibe at the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, saying, “Gone are the days when old people were considered wise and capable enough to run a state or a nation. Now people want fresh blood in politics and only elected representatives to govern them.
Among the party leaders who participated in the commemoration event were Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Assembly speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, newly elected MP Rajya Sabha Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Mubarak Gul, Nazir Gurezi and others, who offered ‘Fateha’ prayers at the mausoleum of the party founder.
