Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for possible light to moderate but widespread snowfall over the next 48 hours, according to the MeT forecast, likely from late Saturday evening.
The anticipated wet spell coincides with the start of Chillai Kalan—the harshest 40-day winter period— beginning this Sunday, December 21. Cold weather with dense fog is constantly affecting morning flight operations at Srinagar International Airport.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “Generally cloudy weather with light to moderate snow over higher reaches and light rain or snow in the plains is expected at many places from December 20 to 21.”
Nearly all weather stations in the Kashmir Valley recorded a slight dip in minimum temperatures amid the ongoing cold wave. On Friday night, the minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped to minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, while temperatures across north, south, and central Kashmir districts also witnessed a slight dip due to cloudy weather conditions.
Katra in the Jammu division remained the warmest place with 10.0 degrees Celsius, while South Kashmir’s Pulwama was the coldest, recording minus 3.2 degrees Celsius.
Daytime temperatures have stayed relatively normal across Jammu and Kashmir, while nighttime temperatures have remained below the freezing point across most weather stations in the Valley.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, recorded minus 1.0 degrees, while several other weather stations across north Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, also witnessed a slight dip in the minimum temperatures.
In the Jammu division, the weather remained relatively moderate, with Jammu city recording 9.3 degrees Celsius, while Banihal, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, and Batote experienced a slight dip in the nighttime temperatures over the past weeks.
