Estimates from the railways suggest that two important rail bridges on the Jammu-Pathankot stretch had suffered extensive damage during the August-September floods, which caused massive infrastructure damage in the Jammu division.

A team led by divisional Railway Manager, Jammu Division, Vivek Kumar, carried out anextensive inspection of stations and railway sections to review safety measures, passenger amenities and restoration work, a spokesperson of the Jammu railway division said.

Besides, Kumar also carried out a surprise check of the railway section between Jammu and Pathankot Cantonment, the spokesperson added.

The inspection team thoroughly reviewed operational measures at railway bridge number 17, located between Kathua and Madhopur, and railway bridge number 137, located between Ghagwal and Hiranagar, he said.

Kumar was also accompanied by senior officers of the division. Safety, passenger convenience, and operational suitability, along with repair and restoration work, were the key issues assessed by the team led by Vivek Kumar.

The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Railways, especially the Jammu–Baramulla line, are crucial for all-weather connectivity, boosting socio-economic growth by integrating the Valley with India, revolutionising tourism, and creating markets for local produce like fruits and handicrafts.

It not only connects the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country but is poised to become one of the most important logistical railway routes for defence and security purposes.
