The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday said over 1,800 fire incidents have been reported across the Union Territory since 2023, with around Rs 18 crore disbursed as relief to the affected victims.
Replying to a query by National Conference MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar during the Assembly session, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Disaster Management portfolio, said a total of 1,876 fire incidents were reported in the last three years.
He stated that an amount of Rs 1,799.09 lakh has been allocated to fire victims as per the assistance criteria under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
“Relief has been granted to victims whose properties or homes were destroyed as per the notified rules and assistance norms,” Omar added. He further noted that relief assistance for victims of recognised natural disasters, including fires, will continue to follow the uniform all-India norms stipulated under the SDRF for the period 2022–2026.
Addressing concerns about the adequacy of compensation amid rising construction costs, the Chief Minister said any revision in assistance norms falls under the jurisdiction of the Government of India, as the existing framework is applied uniformly across the country.
