Security forces stationed in North Kashmir’s Kupwara on Friday recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a hideout located in the Sogam forest area after a joint search operation conducted by the BSF and JK police.

According to a BSF spokesperson, "Security forces seized a big stockpile of weaponry and ammunition in the northern frontier region of Kupwara."

He added, "While police in the adjoining Baramulla district arrested two people suspected of anti-national actions under the Public Safety Act (PSA)."

The recovery of war-like stores in Kupwara was made after specific intelligence provided by the BSF.

"An official spokesperson during a press briefing said, "During the search operation, a terrorist hideout with substantial amounts of war-like supplies was recovered."

As per reports, "the terrorists intended to utilise these war-like ordinances to carry out terror attacks during the upcoming parliamentary elections in Kupwara and Lolab," the statement said.

The amount of weapons and ammunition recovered from the hideout suggests that terrorists were using and storing weapons for years in this particular hideout.

This ordinance could have been used to carry out multiple attacks on the security establishments throughout the valley.

Ammunition included six under-barrel grenade launchers (UBGL), 13 UBGL grenades, one IED, 23 Chinese grenades, five hand grenades, one handgun, one Ak-47 rifle, five AK magazines, 1,135 AK rounds, and other war-related items.

The seizure has come as the nation prepares for the 2024 parliamentary elections, and having this sort of ammunition found in the valley is a matter of grave concern for the security establishments.

"This operation has delivered a major blow to the nefarious designs of Pakistan-occupied J&K-based terrorist groups who have always aspired to disturb the peace and tranquillity in Kashmir Valley," the spokesperson said.
