Jammu and Kashmir is expected to experience mostly dry weather, with no significant snowfall or rainfall until February 24, the Meteorological Department (MeT) in Srinagar said on Thursday.

Night temperatures across the Union Territory have shown marked improvement in recent days following fresh snowfall in the upper reaches between February 9 and 11.

The plains are likely to remain generally dry from February 12, though cloudy night skies and the possibility of light snowfall at isolated higher reaches cannot be ruled out on February 13.

Dry conditions are forecast from February 14 to 16, followed by a brief spell of rain and snowfall on February 17. From February 18 to 21, the weather is expected to stay mostly dry, with cloudy skies likely from February 22 to 24.

The traffic department has advised travellers to check with local authorities before planning journeys on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

Minimum temperatures in the Kashmir Valley have fluctuated over the past few weeks after the conclusion of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period.

A 20-day Chillai-Khurd (“small cold”) began on Saturday following the end of Chillai-Kalan. This will be followed by the 10-day Chillai-Bachha (“baby cold”). While the weather is expected to remain largely dry over the next two weeks, the MeT cautioned that the possibility of rain and snowfall cannot be entirely ruled out.
