As per the revised schedule, classes from kindergarten to VIII will now be conducted from 7:00 to 11:30 am.

In response to the intensifying heatwave across Jharkhand, the state government has announced revised school timings to protect students from extreme weather conditions.

The decision comes as temperatures in several districts continue to hover around or exceed 40°C, with hot winds severely affecting daily life.

The School Education and Literacy Department has issued an order making the new timings effective from April 21, 2026, across the state. The move aims to minimize students’ exposure to harsh afternoon heat and reduce associated health risks.

As per the revised schedule, classes from kindergarten to VIII will now be conducted from 7:00 to 11:30 am. For students of Classes IX to XII, schools will run from 7:00 am to 12:00 noon. The early closure is expected to help students return home before peak heat hours.

Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, and even heatstroke, especially among children.

Taking note of these risks, Health and Disaster Management Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari had earlier issued a yellow alert and directed authorities to prioritise children’s safety.

Following these directives, the education department acted swiftly to implement the changes. Schools have also been instructed to ensure the availability of drinking water and adopt necessary precautions to safeguard students from heat-related illnesses.

The decision has been widely welcomed by parents, who had been demanding a change in school timings due to rising temperatures. Many described the move as timely and essential, particularly for children who travel long distances to attend school, especially in rural areas.

The revised schedule is expected to benefit lakhs of students across the state. It reflects the government’s proactive approach in adapting to changing weather conditions while ensuring student safety. Authorities have indicated that further measures may be considered if temperatures continue to rise in the coming days.
