At least two rebels, including a woman, of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation were killed and a security person was injured in a fierce encounter with police and Central paramilitary forces in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand on Wednesday.

The encounter took place on Wednesday morning in the Naxal-affected Sonuwa police station area of the district. Sources said that West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Shekhar had received information that CPI Maoist rebels had gathered in the Sonuwa police station area to carry out a major incident.

After the information a search operation was launched by the State police and CRPF in the jungles. During the search operation, the Maoists started firing as they saw the security forces, which also returned fire.

In the encounter, which lasted about 30 minutes, two Maoists were killed and a security person was injured. Sources said that other Maoists managed to escape by taking advantage of the dense forest.

“A joint team of Jharkhand Police and 209 Cobra Battalion had an encounter with Maoists during which two Maoists, including one woman, were killed while a security personnel received minor injury in his hand,” said Shekhar.

Bodies of the two rebels, killed in the gun battle, have already been recovered from the spot, he added.

The SP further added that two INSAS rifles along with the dead body of the two Maoists have also been recovered from the spot.

After the encounter, the security forces surrounded the entire forest and an intense search operation was going on at the time of filing of this report.

The State police have launched a major offensive against Maoists operating in Jharkhand as they aim to make the State extremism-free by the year 2026.

On January 22, two Maoists, including a woman, were killed following an encounter with security forces in the Upperghat area of Bermo subdivision, Bokaro district. Two policemen were also injured in the incident.

The operation was launched based on information from the Intelligence Bureau. The bodies of the two Naxals, an AK-47 rifle and two Insas rifles were recovered from them.
