Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Sunday visited the families of Jaswant Singh and Balwinder Singh, two policemen who lost their lives in an encounter in Kathua district, and announced multiple support measures, including government jobs for their next of kin.
The minister pledged financial assistance of up to ₹70 lakh per family and announced that memorial gates would be constructed in their honour using funds from the Member of Parliament (MP) Local Area Development Scheme.
During his visit to the martyrs' homes in Londi and Kanna Chak, Singh assured that both policemen’s wives would receive government jobs under the Special Recruitment Ordinance (SRO) provisions.
He further stated that a proposal would be submitted to rename government schools after the fallen officers as a tribute to their sacrifice.
Singh, who was in Odisha when the encounter took place, made it a priority to visit the bereaved families before heading to Majalta in Udhampur district, where he was scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a new bridge.

He emphasised that the project aimed to improve regional connectivity and infrastructure, reaffirming the government’s commitment to development and public welfare.
Paying his respects to the slain officers, Singh highlighted the immense contributions and sacrifices of their families. He noted that one of the families had a history of valor, with a member having received the prestigious Victoria Cross for bravery during the British era.
He also shared details about the educational qualifications of the martyrs' wives—Jaswant Singh’s wife holds an MA and a B.Ed degree, while Balwinder Singh’s wife has completed her 12th grade—ensuring that suitable government jobs would be provided accordingly.
"As a Member of Parliament, I am committed to honoring their memory by constructing memorials for both martyrs. Additionally, we will propose naming schools in their honor, as has been done previously for other heroes," Singh stated.
