Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) legislator from Dumri, Jairam Mahato, has landed in potential legal trouble for allegedly violating election norms during the ongoing Ghatsila Assembly by-election campaign.
A video that surfaced from a campaign rally showed Mahato standing atop a Scorpio vehicle while addressing voters— an act that contravenes Election Commission safety regulations. Officials said such behaviour not only breaches model code provisions but also poses a risk to public safety.
East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Karn Satyarthi confirmed the violation through a social media post, noting that campaigning from the roof of a four-wheeler is strictly prohibited under election guidelines.
The Deputy Commissioner has directed the concerned candidate or party to submit a written explanation within 24 hours.
Authorities warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response could result in legal action under relevant election laws.
As per the Election Commission’s safety code, candidates and their supporters are barred from sitting or standing on vehicles during processions or public interactions. The rule aims to prevent accidents and maintain order during campaigning.
With the notice issued, all eyes are now on Mahato’s reply and the administrative follow-up that will determine whether further action is initiated against the legislator.
