Justice MS Sonak, currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued the official notification on Friday following approval by the President of India.

The appointment comes in view of the impending retirement of the present Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who is scheduled to superannuate on January 8.

Legal circles expect Justice Sonak to take oath on the same day and formally assume charge thereafter, ensuring a smooth transition in the court’s leadership.

Justice Sonak’s name was earlier recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India, after considering his seniority, judicial experience and service record.

His elevation is seen as part of the routine yet significant reshuffling of chief justices across high courts to maintain administrative efficiency and judicial continuity.

Born in Goa, Justice Sonak completed his schooling in Panaji and went on to pursue higher education in science and law before enrolling as an advocate in 1988.

He practised extensively at the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court, dealing with a wide range of matters including constitutional law, civil disputes, service cases, labour issues, taxation, environmental matters and public interest litigations.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013 and later became a permanent judge. During his tenure, he has been known for his clear reasoning, emphasis on constitutional values and efficient disposal of cases.
