Schools in Jammu and Kashmir reopened on Monday after an extended summer break of 20 days following heavy rainfall in the region.
Schools were initially closed on July 6 for nearly two weeks as the Kashmir Valley was reeling under an intense heatwave and unusually hot summer conditions. While the heatwave subsided on July 18, continuous rainfall in the region created flood-like situations, forcing the government to extend the summer holidays until July 26.
Some school buildings were affected by flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains.
Officials said the government has initiated safety checks of schools affected by flash floods across the Union Territory.
Reports said some government and private school buildings were damaged in the aftermath of the weather-related disasters, particularly in some districts of the Jammu division.
Education Minister Sakeena Itoo had earlier said there were no plans to extend the summer holidays in the UT and that schools would reopen on Monday. She had said that extended holidays disrupt the academic calendar and increase the burden on both students and teachers.
