A man suspected of being a member of a militant group in south Kashmir was arrested in West Bengal's south 24 Parganas district on Sunday, according to officials.
Javed Munshi, who is allegedly associated with the banned militant group 'Tehreek-e-Mujahideen' in Kashmir, was caught near a hospital by a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Bengal Police.
Javed claimed he was visiting a relative's house in Canning town for personal reasons, but he had been involved in illegal activities in Kashmir and was wanted by Jammu and Kashmir Police for a long time.
The Tehreek-e-Mujahideen group is believed to be based in Pakistan and has connections with other militant groups in Kashmir, as well as in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Javed's relatives, who are from Srinagar, said they were unaware of any ties he might have had with a terror group. They added that if the charges are true, the law should take its course.
The officer also stated that Javed will be presented in Alipore court for transit remand soon.
This arrest comes after the recent capture of eight suspected members of the militant group Ansar-al-Islam Bangladesh, who were reportedly planning to attack the 'Chicken's Neck,' a narrow strip of land connecting West Bengal’s Siliguri to northeastern states.
Two of the eight arrested suspects were from Murshidabad district, and they were part of a group apprehended by police from Bengal, Kerala, and Assam.
