Gangster Gurpreet Singh alias Goldy Dhillon, arrested in Spain in connection with the Chandigarh chemist's murder case.

A suspect in the Chandigarh chemist murder case, identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Goldy Dhillon, a foreign-based gangster who had also threatened AAP MLA Neena Mittal, has been arrested in Spain, Punjab Police confirmed on Saturday.

Sources claimed that the arrest was carried out in a joint operation involving Punjab Police, Central intelligence agencies and Chandigarh Police, who had been tracking Dhillon's movements abroad for several months.

Police have learnt that Goldy Dhillon is a close associate of Canada-based gangster Satinderjit Singh alias Goldy Brar, who has been designated a terrorist by the Union Home Ministry.

Dhillon had been named as a co-conspirator along with Brar in an NIA chargesheet in an extortion-cum-firing case targeting a businessman in Chandigarh's Sector 5.

According to officials, six men had travelled from Jammu to Punjab on Dhillon's instructions before splitting into two modules. One module allegedly shot dead a cashier at a pharmacy, while the second waited in Chandigarh to receive a fresh target before being intercepted near Mullanpur with a foreign-made C47 pistol and a .32-bore pistol.

Sources also said Dhillon had been running multiple extortion and target-killing modules across the state over the past year.

In one of the cases, two operatives allegedly tasked by him with carrying out killings in Mohali and Rajpura were nabbed by the police before they could execute the crime.

In the second case, two young men recruited through social media allegedly opened fire at a house in Gaddo Majra, Rajpura, injuring an elderly resident. Dhillon then reportedly demanded ransom from the victim's US-based son.

Investigators traced his key recruiter, Mandeep Sarpanch, to Spain, from where the extortion network was reportedly run. According to investigators, Dhillon had sought to establish dominance over the illegal arms and narcotics trade in Punjab by eliminating rival gangs.
