Senior Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Sunday called on the Punjab government and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan to extend the ongoing assembly session, arguing that more time is required to debate six Bills tabled right at the end of the sitting.
The legislation — which covers proposals for three digital universities, GST adjustments, outsourced and contractual workers, and shared infrastructure — has been introduced with the Monsoon session scheduled to conclude on Monday. Khaira questioned how measures with such far-reaching consequences could be thoroughly examined and voted on in a single day, warning that rushed lawmaking risks undermining the legislative process.
The Bholath MLA urged the leadership to give members enough time to review the texts, speak with affected groups, seek department clarifications, and table amendments. Noting that the Vidhan Sabha should not function as a rubber stamp for the Cabinet, he said that since laws create future liabilities on the part of the industry, government servants, and students, late-night approval would create difficulties. He singled out the three separate Digital University Bills, demanding to know why these proposals were not brought forward much earlier.
Appealing directly to Speaker Sandhwan, Khaira urged the chair to uphold parliamentary standards and extend the sitting, arguing that forcing six major pieces of legislation through on the final day compromises the interests of the state.
