Kolkata Metro to go driverless after clearing safety trial

The trial run was carried out on the Green Line after metro services were delayed on Sunday, beginning at 4.30 pm instead of the usual 9.00 am. A special train rake travelled from Howrah Maidan to Sector V without manual operation, though a driver and senior metro officials remained inside the cabin as a safety measure during the inspection.

Kolkata Metro achieves milestone as driverless trial run successfully conducted on Green Line from Howrah Maidan to Sector V. CRS inspection paves way for full autonomous operations.

Kolkata’s public transport system is set for a historic transformation as the Metro prepares to introduce driverless train operations on the Green Line connecting Howrah Maidan and Salt Lake Sector V. A successful trial run and safety inspection of the autonomous metro system were conducted on Sunday, with the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) reviewing safety measures, emergency response systems and operational preparedness across the entire route, including the underwater tunnel beneath the Ganges.

The entire journey was remotely controlled from the Operation Control Room (OCC) at Central Park, demonstrating the capabilities of the advanced signalling system installed on the route. According to Metro officials, the Green Line operates using the latest Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, which enables automated train movement, monitoring, and control.

During the inspection, the train crossed the 520-metre underwater tunnel beneath the Ganges in around 45 seconds. Officials also reviewed emergency preparedness measures at all 12 stations along the route to ensure passenger safety during autonomous operations. Once formal approval is granted by the CRS, full-scale driverless metro services will begin for passengers. Under the new system, the role of train operators will be significantly reduced, with their responsibilities mainly limited to functions such as opening and closing train doors.

However, to ensure passengers are comfortable with the new technology, Metro authorities have decided to retain a driver in the cabin during the initial phase of operations. Officials said the move would help passengers adapt gradually to travelling on a fully automated metro system.
