Ahead of Muharram on June 26, Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar has issued a series of strict directives to ensure peaceful observance and maintain communal harmony across the city.
According to police sources, all police stations were instructed not to grant permission for any new Muharram processions. Only traditional processions that have been conducted over the years will be allowed, and that too under existing regulations. Senior officers, including those of Deputy Commissioner rank, held meetings with police stations to review law-and-order preparedness and convey detailed guidelines.
Among the key directives, the police have strictly prohibited the display of weapons or weapon-like objects during processions. Guidelines have also been issued regarding the height of Tazias, with instructions to avoid excessively tall structures that could pose risks to overhead electric wires and cable lines.
The use of DJs during Muharram processions has been completely banned. Loudspeakers, if used, must adhere to prescribed decibel limits in line with High Court directives. Police have been asked to remain vigilant against noise pollution and ensure that no provocative or sensitive messages are disseminated during the processions.
Lalbazar has further directed local police stations to hold advance coordination meetings with procession organisers. These meetings will focus on finalising routes, reviewing security arrangements, and ensuring compliance with all safety measures.
To strengthen security, additional police forces will be deployed across key locations in the city on the day of Muharram. Special surveillance will be maintained along procession routes, with officials emphasising zero tolerance for any untoward incidents.
Police sources stated that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the smooth conduct of Muharram and uphold peace and harmony in the city.
