Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday claimed that lakhs of “doubtful voters” were deleted from the state’s electoral rolls during the Special Revision (SR) exercise, a day after the Election Commission published the final voters’ list with over 2.43 lakh names struck off the draft roll.
Addressing a press conference here, Sarma said the deletions were carried out following complaints lodged by BJP workers during the revision process.
“This is only the beginning. Names of more such people will be deleted when the Special Intensive Revision will be conducted,” he said.
Despite “threats and intimidations”, BJP activists filed complaints against doubtful voters, the Chief Minister added.
On Tuesday, the final electoral roll was published in poll-bound Assam after the completion of claims and objections. According to a statement issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the final roll comprises 2.49 crore voters, nearly 1.25 crore men, 1.24 crore women and 343 third-gender voters, marking a 0.97 per cent decrease from the draft list published on December 27 last year.

More than 2.43 lakh names were deleted from the draft roll of 2.52 crore electors during the revision exercise.
In Sarma’s Jalukbari constituency, 2,06,314 electors feature in the final list, a decline of 4,310 from the 2,10,624 voters recorded in the draft roll. The deletions amount to 2.05 per cent of names in the constituency.
Eligible voters whose names were removed during the SR on the ground of having “permanently shifted” can apply for re-inclusion under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
“People who have shifted from their earlier places of residence due to various reasons, including eviction drives, will find their names deleted from their previous polling stations or constituencies. If they could not apply for the shifting of their names before the deletion, they can now apply for inclusion at their new address under this provision,” an official said, adding that applications can be filed after publication of the final roll.
Sarma also said, “The war on illegal Bangladeshi Muslim (immigrants) will continue.”
