The Lakshadweep Administration has declared every Wednesday as a ‘No Vehicle Day’ across all islands, triggering concern and criticism from residents, political leaders, and community representatives over its potential impact on daily life and livelihoods.

The order, issued on February 17 and signed by District Collector and Secretary (General Administration and Protocol) R Giri Shankar, states that vehicular movement will be prohibited every Wednesday throughout Lakshadweep. Violators will face a fine of Rs 500.

According to the administration, the initiative aims to promote public health and environmental sustainability by encouraging walking and cycling while reducing pollution caused by vehicle emissions. However, exemptions have been granted for vehicles used by persons with disabilities, security agencies, and emergency medical services.

The decision has come just four months after another controversial directive requiring police clearance for coconut plucking in the islands of Andrott and Kalpeni.

Lakshadweep MP M. Hamdullah Sayeed expressed concern that the restriction could create significant inconvenience, especially for passengers arriving by ships or flights on Wednesdays. He urged authorities to reconsider the order and adopt a balanced approach that protects the environment without disrupting residents’ welfare. He also noted that Lakshadweep already maintains low pollution levels due to its limited number of vehicles.

Ajmal Ahmed R, Vice President of Lakshadweep Pradesh Youth Congress, questioned the necessity of a blanket ban, pointing out that the islands have minimal traffic and emissions compared to mainland cities. He highlighted logistical challenges, including the transport of passengers, patients, students, and essential goods from jetties to homes and markets.

He warned that cargo operations could be severely affected, with traditional cargo boats and passenger vessels relying on local transport to move goods. Restrictions could result in essential commodities being stranded at ports and perishable goods being damaged.

Community leaders also raised concerns about the economic impact on daily wage earners, transport workers, and small businesses dependent on vehicle movement. Ajmal said many families rely on port-related work and transport services, and losing a day’s income each week could harm already fragile livelihoods.

Attakoya MI, a senior community leader, said the order has created anxiety, particularly as it coincides with the holy month of Ramadan. He noted that mobility is crucial for religious activities, education, healthcare, and routine responsibilities.

Lakshadweep Youth Congress chief Ajas Akbar criticised the administration for implementing the restriction without adequate public consultation. He argued that environmental awareness should be promoted through voluntary participation rather than enforced penalties.

He also raised concerns about unemployment in the islands, noting that many educated youth work as taxi drivers due to a lack of government jobs. He warned that protests could be organised if the administration fails to reconsider the directive.

The order is expected to intensify debate over environmental policy, governance, and public consultation in the ecologically sensitive island territory.
