Lance Naik Narendra Singh Sindhu of Rohera village in Kaithal district was cremated with full state honours on Wednesday.
His body, wrapped in the Tricolour, was brought to his native village where thousands of villagers, relatives, ex-servicemen, Army officials, district administration officers, and political leaders gathered to pay their last respects.
Sindhu, 28, was martyred on Monday in an encounter with terrorists in Kulgam, Jammu & Kashmir. As his mortal remains reached the village, the atmosphere was filled with grief and pride.
As his younger brother is in the US, his cousin Rohtas performed the last rites by lighting the funeral pyre. The Army gave him a guard of honour, and senior officer L A Singha presented the National Flag to the martyr’s father, Dalbir Singh, a farmer, who accepted it with tears in his eyes and pride in his heart.
“I am proud of my son’s sacrifice. He has brought glory to our family and the nation,” Dalbir Singh said, saluting his son.
Narendra Singh joined the 3 Raj Rifles in 2017 and had been posted to the Rashtriya Rifles unit in Srinagar for the last four years. His maternal uncle and ex-soldier Azad Singh said Narendra was on patrol when terrorists ambushed his unit around 11 am. Though seriously injured, he kept fighting until he succumbed to his wounds in hospital. He was to celebrate his birthday on October 5 with his family while on leave, but god had other plans.
He is survived by his father, his mother Roshni Devi, a homemaker, his younger brother, and two married sisters.
At the cremation, SDM Ajay Singh offered floral tributes on behalf of the district administration. He announced that, on the orders of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the martyr’s family will receive Rs 1 crore financial aid, a government job, and the village government school will be named after Lance Naik Narendra Singh Sindhu.
