The two militants killed while infiltrating the Khari Kamara sector of Poonch along the Line of Control (LoC) last night were believed to be part of the fidayeen group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), suspected of plotting a major attack.
Security sources confirmed that three militants were involved, evident from the recovery of three AK-47 rifles and a pistol from the encounter site. "The third militant managed to escape back to Pakistan," officials revealed.
The bodies of the slain militants were recovered and appeared to be Pakistani nationals, officials added. Evidence collected from their possession indicated they were members of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit.
“Recoveries from the militants showed they were trying to infiltrate into Poonch to carry out a major fidayeen attack, but alert troops thwarted their attempt on the LoC,” sources further stated.
General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of Udhampur-based Northern Command, Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar, lauded the White Knight Corps on social media platform X for their swift and precise action in neutralising the militants.
"The Indian Army stands by its commitment to keep Jammu (and) Kashmir terror-free," he wrote.
Militant activity has been reported in the higher reaches of Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi districts.
Security forces, including the Army, paramilitary personnel, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Special Operations Group, have intensified anti-militancy operations across these regions.
Yesterday’s operation was considered a significant success for security forces as they counter rising infiltration attempts along the LoC. The international border in Jammu and Punjab, however, has remained calm for the past few months.
