Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday described the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, as one of the gravest assaults on India’s democracy and Constitution.

He made the remarks as the Bharatiya Janata Party observed Samvidhan Hatya Diwas and paid tributes to those who resisted the move and opposed the authoritarian regime during that period.

In his post on X on the occasion of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, LG Sinha remembered the sacrifices of the satyagrahis who stood firm against what many described as an authoritarian phase in the country.

“Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, was one of the gravest assaults on the Constitution and democratic ethos of our Republic. On Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, I pay tributes to all satyagrahis who resisted authoritarianism with courage and played a vital role in restoring India’s democracy,” LG Sinha said in his post.

The day is observed to commemorate the anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975, a period widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history.
