Malayalam rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, was arrested on Wednesday, 10 September, by the Thrikkakara police in connection with a rape case filed by a woman doctor.

Police said the arrest was recorded after two days of questioning, during which investigators gathered evidence to support the allegations. “Vedan was released soon after, as the Kerala High Court had already granted him anticipatory bail, noting that custodial interrogation was unnecessary despite the seriousness of the charges,” said a police officer.

According to the police, the complaint, first lodged in July, accuses Vedan of repeatedly raping the complainant—a Kozhikode-based doctor—between 2021 and 2023 under the false promise of marriage.

“The woman alleged that the rapper not only forced sexual relations but also borrowed money from her over two years, amounting to Rs 31,000. According to her statement, Rs 10,000 was given in December 2021 to fund the release of one of his songs, Rs 5,000 at a later stage and Rs 8,356 for train tickets,” said the officer.

She has submitted digital payment records, including Google Pay transactions, to police as supporting evidence, the officer added.

“The complainant said the relationship began on social media in 2019, but by July 2023 Vedan began ignoring her calls, distanced himself, and ultimately cut off contact. She claimed this sudden withdrawal pushed her into depression, adding that he referred to her as “toxic” before ending the relationship,” said another officer working on this case.

Speaking to the media after completing bail formalities, Vedan expressed confidence in clearing his name.  “I will say everything once I’m free. I will keep performing, where can I go?” he remarked. His lawyer has maintained that the relationship was consensual, dismissing the allegations as false.

Meanwhile, the prosecution pointed out that there are multiple similar complaints against the rapper, raising questions over his conduct.

In a separate incident, two men—identified as Faisal and Sarath—created a disturbance outside the Thrikkakara police station during Vedan’s arrest proceedings. Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, the duo shouted obscenities, lay on the ground in front of the station and had to be taken into custody.
