A 28-year-old man was reportedly beaten to death with a baseball bat by his friends in Dehradun. The accused later buried his body in the Chidiyapur forest area of Haridwar.
Police said the case came to light when a team looking out for the missing man, Dingbar Dhiman, traced a taxi driver. The accused had used his vehicle to dispose the body.
On the basis of the information given by the taxi driver, Dhiman’s body was recovered from the Chidiyapur forest. The driver, Rajanandan Thakur, was apprehended for allegedly helping hide the victim’s body.
According to reports, Dhiman was facing charges of allegedly raping a minor. On February 9, he had gone to court with his father for a hearing in the case. After getting the next date from the court, he asked his father to return home, saying he would come later. However, he never came back.
Dhiman’s father filed a missing person complaint on February 11, following which police began a search. During the probe, police found that some of Dhiman’s friends, who allegedly consumed drugs with him, were also missing since the same time.
Police said suspecting their involvement, teams activated their informant network to collect information about Dhiman and his missing friends.
Officers also questioned family members and local residents. They learned that one of the missing men, Hemant Semwal, had left his rented room in Racecourse C-Block on the night of February 9 in a taxi.
Using CCTV footage, police identified the taxi and detained its driver, Rajanandan Thakur, a resident of New Patel Nagar, for questioning. During interrogation, Thakur told police that Semwal and his companions had carried a man’s body wrapped in a blanket in his taxi and buried it in the Chidiyapur forest.
He further said the accused told him they had argued with Dhiman while drinking. During the fight, one of them hit Dhiman on the head with a baseball bat, which led to his death.
Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar said separate teams have been constituted and sent to different locations to trace the accused. He added that all those involved in the incident will be arrested soon.
