Police have apprehended a man for allegedly killing his wife in a village of Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, officials said on Tuesday. As per police sources, the accused, identified as Sunny Kumar, reportedly attacked his 32-year-old wife, Kalti Devi, with a sharp-edged weapon while she was asleep in the wee hours of Monday. She died on the spot due to the injuries.
Devi is survived by three children — two sons and a daughter. Police said her young daughter was reportedly sleeping beside her at the time of the incident.
Initial probe indicates that the accused had gone out on the night of March 29 with his brother to take part in a suspected black magic ritual. Later, around midnight, Kumar brought his wife to his brother’s house in Kutahan village, where they stayed overnight.
The incident took place at around 4.30 am when Kumar allegedly attacked his wife with an axe while other family members were asleep in nearby rooms. Hearing the noise, his brother rushed to the spot and immediately alerted the police.
Police teams reached the scene, took the accused into custody and sent the body for post-mortem examination. A forensic team also collected evidence from the crime scene.
Police said Kumar, a daily wage labourer, is originally from Bir-Baijnath and was currently living in Lambagaon. Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed that the accused has been arrested and that probe is underway to ascertain the motive behind the crime.
Police added that a murder case has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
