Police detained a man posing as an Army personnel at the Roorkee Military Cantonment in Haridwar, Uttarakhand on Thursday, officials said. The man was wearing an Army uniform and moving around inside the cantonment when he was caught.
According to police, a joint operation by Army intelligence, local intelligence agencies, and the police led to the arrest. Officers recovered 18 bank debit cards, an Army uniform, a nameplate, a fake Army identity card, and a fake joining letter from the possession of the accused.
Police and intelligence agencies are now investigating the motive behind his presence inside the military area and whether he had any links or intentions beyond impersonation.
Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramod Dobhal said Army intelligence officials grew suspicious after noticing the man’s activities inside the Roorkee Military Cantonment complex. They immediately informed the local police.
A joint team from Army intelligence, the Roorkee Police, the Criminal Intelligence Unit, and the Local Intelligence Unit then conducted a coordinated operation and arrested the accused near the MES gate inside the cantonment.
The arrested man was identified as Surendra Kumar, a resident of Kolsiya village under the jurisdiction of the Nawalgarh Police Station in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district.
